BUCCAL FAT EXTRACTION

Fat extraction is ideal procedure for select patients with "full cheeks" who desire a more sculpted look to the face. Rather than remove the more superficial fat of the mid-face (which can leave heavy skin jowls with aging), this technique focuses on redefining the deeper architecture by removing the hidden fat pockets tucked beneath muscular layer of the mid-cheek. The ideal candidate for this procedure has well-defined cheek bones (or enhanced with implants) and a strong jawline but "baby like" fullness in the mid-face. Buccal fat extraction re-creates more sensuous cheek hollows and a better defined contour in the central portion of the face. The procedure may be done independently or in conjunction with other operations to enhance facial contour and appearance (neck lift, microliposuction of the jawline and neck, chin or malar implants, etc.)

PROCEDURE AND RECOVERY: The 3/4 inch incision is made inside the mouth just above the gum line above the first and second molars. Gentle pressure is placed on the cheek and the fat pocket (about the size of a large cherry) is expressed and removed. The infra-oral incision is closed with dissolvable stitches.

Ice compresses are applied immediately and frequently. Mid-face swelling and bruising will last 7 to 10 days. A soft or- liquid diet is necessary for 3 to 5 days. While rare, complications may include infection, hematoma, nerve or muscle weakness (usually transient), injury to the parotid duct, or asymmetry.

Buccal fat extraction is a reasonably simple procedure to convert a "rounded" face to a more sculpted look with more defined planes.
